Oregon Supreme Court rules GOP lawmakers who walked out can’t run for reelection

The Oregon Supreme Court ruled Thursday that 10 GOP state senators cannot run for reelection after they refused to attend Senate sessions for about six weeks out of protest last year in an attempt to stall Democratic-backed bills.

The court ruling upholds a secretary of state decision to keep the lawmakers off 2024 ballots, citing a 2022 referendum that bars lawmakers from seeking reelection if they have more than 10 unexcused absences.

Five of the lawmakers challenged the secretary of state decision, arguing that the specific wording of the 2022 referendum should allow them one more term before being barred from office.

Court arguments focused on the grammar of the referendum, with each party arguing over when the election ban would take place.

The constitutional amendment says a lawmaker is not allowed to run “for the term following the election after the member’s current term is completed.” The lawmakers argued that would let them run again, as the election is held before the end of their terms, with the secretary of state and ultimately the state Supreme Court disagreeing.

“We obviously disagree with the Supreme Court’s ruling. But more importantly, we are deeply disturbed by the chilling impact this decision will have to crush dissent,” said state Sen. Tim Knopp, the chamber’s Republican minority leader.

Trump’s Supreme Court Brief Rebuts the Claim That He ‘Engaged in Insurrection’

That section of the brief is highly misleading in some respects, minimizing the recklessness of Trump’s pre-riot speech and his inexcusable dereliction of duty after the assault on the Capitol began. Those actions and inactions rightly led to Trump’s impeachment by the House and should have resulted in his conviction by the Senate, which would have barred him from running for president again. But it does not necessarily follow that they amounted to engaging in an insurrection, and Trump’s lawyers offer several cogent reasons to reject that assessment.

That description omits crucial context, including the two months that Trump had spent ginning up his supporters’ outrage with phony claims of a stolen election, his messages encouraging them to attend a rally that he said would be “wild,” and the apocalyptic rhetoric of his speech at the Ellipse, which warned that Congress was about to destroy democracy by anointing a pretender as president. “We’re going to have somebody in there that should not be in there,” he said, “and our country will be destroyed, and we’re not going to stand for that.” If his supporters did not “fight like hell,” he warned, “you’re not going to have a country anymore.”

Jury orders Trump to pay E. Jean Carroll $83.3 million in damages

Less than three hours after beginning deliberation, the jury in the second defamation case brought by columnist E. Jean Carroll against former President Donald Trump issues a verdict ordering him to pay her $83.3 million in damages for his defamatory statements regarding his sexual assault of Carroll in 1996.

In a unanimous verdict, the jury found that Trump owed Carroll $7.3 million for compensatory damages, $11 million in order to repair her reputation and $65 million in punitive damages.

Sidney Powell blasted for “underwhelming” one-sentence Fulton County plea deal apology

“I apologize for my actions in connection with the events in Coffee County,” Powell wrote in an Oct. 19 letter, dated the same day she pleaded guilty to six misdemeanors related to efforts to interfere with the performance of election duties. “I apologize to the citizens of the state of Georgia and of Fulton County for my involvement in Count 15 of the indictment,” Chesebro wrote in a letter dated Oct. 20, which is when he pleaded guilty to one felony count of conspiracy to commit filing false documents. Powell and Chesebro are among four defendants in the sprawling racketeering case to reach plea deals with Georgia prosecutors. The letters written by the other two defendants who pleaded guilty — Trump lawyer Jenna Ellis and Scott Hall, a bail bondsman — were longer and more detailed.

“These letters from Chesebro and Powell are…underwhelming,” MSNBC’s Katie Phang wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “To be filed under ‘THAT’S AN UNDERSTATEMENT,’ former Mueller prosecutor Andrew Weissmann added. “No jail time, eventual expungement of criminal record, and court sign-off on crimes not being of moral turpitude (so can continue to practice law)—all the consequences for engaging in attempted overthrow of US presidential election.”
