“Unbelievable that @JohnCornyn would stay up all night to defend other countries borders, but not America,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton posted on X Tuesday morning.

Hours later, Cornyn, a Republican foreign policy hawk and former minority whip, let loose on Paxton. The attorney general recently escaped an impeachment trial over allegations of bribery and corruption and has been dogged by securities fraud charges since 2015.

“Ken, your criminal defense lawyers are calling to suggest you spend less time pushing Russian propaganda and more time defending longstanding felony charges against you in Houston, as well as ongoing federal grand jury proceedings in San Antonio that will probably result in further criminal charges,” Cornyn wrote.

…

Paxton was seemingly undeterred by Cornyn’s criticism. Shortly after the senator slammed him on social media, Paxton posted another diatribe, dubbing Cornyn an “America Last RINO.”

“Unsurprisingly, America Last RINO @JohnCornyn has once again joined hands with the Biden administration to fund and prioritize foreign wars over the national security crisis at the southern border,” Paxton said.

Bernie Moreno, a Republican businessman running for the US Senate in Ohio, once said there was “no scenario” in which he would support Donald Trump. He’s called Trump a “fake Republican” who stokes “hatred and fear” and suggested that the former president’s popularity is the result of “ignorance in our society.”

In several previously unreported audio clips and deleted tweets, uncovered by a CNN KFile review of Moreno’s past statements, the Ohio Republican harshly criticized Trump.

…

Moreno now attacks the “wine-sipping country club Republicans” who are “offended by President Trump’s words.” He characterizes individuals imprisoned for Capitol riot-related offenses as “political prisoners,” claims that the 2020 election was stolen, and alleges collaboration between “big tech,” “the swamp,” the corporate media, and Democrats to rig the election.

Despite this, he previously congratulated President Joe Biden on his 2020 presidential win and after the attack on the Capitol in January 2021, Moreno posted “[Trump] deserves lots and lots of blame for this,” adding, “He didn’t calm tensions; no one (and certainly not me) has excuses [sic] that behavior.”

…

In October 2016, Moreno posted on Twitter in a reply that he wrote-in a vote for Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio – a tweet his campaign spokesman Conor McGuinness tells CNN was meant in “jest,” and that Moreno “absolutely voted for Trump in 2016.”

Appearing on a now-defunct radio show earlier that year he said, “There’s no scenario in which I would support Trump,” adding Trump played to people’s “worst emotions.” “If Trump is the nominee, I think the Republican party is now a different party and not a party that I want to be a part of.”

Moreno was withering in since-deleted tweets from 2016, calling Trump a “fake Republican,” and saying he was “conspiring” with his “ally” Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to take down the Republican Party. He mocked Trump’s signature red “Make America Great Again” hats and disparaged Trump in messages to mainstream media reporters.

“What Trump’s message is really about, is that the America that we really want?” Moreno added on the radio show. “…where hatred is stoked and fears are what drive our decision making?”

…

In early February 2022, Moreno dropped out of the Senate race at Trump’s urging; Trump eventually endorsed Vance for the Senate seat. In this race, Moreno has continued to embrace false election claims.

“Anybody who had eyes and ears knows what happened in 2020,” Moreno said at an October forum.

Moreno deleted tweets he posted before the 2020 presidential election urging Americans to “accept the results,” and deleted tweets praising mail-in voting – which Trump has falsely claimed is rife with fraud. Moreno removed a post saying he would accept the results himself.

In one removed tweet from November 29, 2020, more than three weeks after the election, Moreno attacked Trump directly.

“For @realDonaldTrump to make claims of a fraudulent election without proof. Potentially irreparable harm to US,” he said.

Also among Moreno’s deleted posts is a November 7, 2020 tweet, where he acknowledged Biden’s win and called for unity. He purged tweets where he urged conservatives to accept the outcome and debunked fraud allegations by highlighting Republican gains in the House. He also said that he himself voted by mail in 2020, calling it “safe” and “convenient.”

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) swiped at his Republican colleagues for opposing a deal being crafted in the Senate that pairs border and migration policy changes with Ukraine aid before the text of the bill is out.

“The height of stupidity is having a strong opinion on something you know nothing about,” Crenshaw said Thursday. “So, I don’t have a strong opinion on the bill because I haven’t seen it. Nobody has.”

…

“I’m extremely disappointed in the very strange maneuvering by many on the right to torpedo a potential border reform bill. That’s what we all ran on doing,” Crenshaw continued. “If we have a bill that, on net, significantly decreases illegal immigration, and we sabotage that, that is inconsistent with what we told our voters we would do.”

“It would be a pretty unacceptable dereliction of your duty,” Crenshaw said.

…

Crenshaw also brought up the argument that some Republicans are opposed to the bill for other political reasons.

“There are some in the Senate and in the House who are desperately trying to sabotage it for other reasons. Maybe they think that securing the border would help [President] Biden politically. Which, of course it would, but I want to secure the border. That’s what I told my voters I would do,” Crenshaw said.

…

But Hannity made a misguided effort to make her think twice about aligning with Team Biden, which she did in 2020.

“Maybe she just bought into all the lies about conservatives and Republicans that they’re racist and sexist and homophobic and xenophobic and transphobic and Islamophobic,” Hannity said. “And Republicans and conservatives want dirty air and water and a total ban on all abortions with no exceptions.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., is losing support among his GOP colleagues over his handling of the Biden impeachment probe, with some declaring the inquiry chocks up to a “clueless investigation” at best and a “disaster” at worst.

“One would be hard pressed to find the best moment for James Comer in the Oversight Committee,” one House Republican lawmaker, speaking anonymously to protect relationships, told The Messenger. “It’s been a parade of embarrassments.”

As the 2024 presidential election draws closer, Comer’s impeachment investigation is nearing its conclusion with no hard-hitting accusations to level against President Joe Biden. More than a dozen Republican lawmakers, senior aides and strategists told The Messenger that how little the probe has accomplished has whittled down the faith they had in the Kentucky Republican.

…

“James Comer continues to embarrass himself and House Republicans. He screws up over and over and over,” a source close to GOP leadership told The Messenger. “I don’t know how Republicans actually impeach the president based on his clueless investigation and lack of leadership.”

Comer’s back and forth with Hunter Biden over the president’s son sitting for a closed-door deposition in the investigation was a common example of such “embarrassments.”

…

Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., also told the outlet that Republicans have privately complained about the committee’s last hearing. “Republicans believe the Oversight Committee has been a complete failure in all these theatrical hearings that never deliver on their promise,” Moskowitz said, explaining that after the last hearing Republican committee members told him it “was a complete debacle for them.”

“This is why we shouldn’t pick our chairman based on how much money they raise,” another member told Moskowitz, according to the Florida Democrat.

…
