Arizona state Sen. Anthony Kern (R), a “fake elector” for Donald Trump in 2020 who was also photographed on Capitol grounds during the Jan. 6 attack, has filed a longshot proposal to allow Arizona politicians to overturn the will of voters in presidential elections.

It’s the latest in a long line of similar bills in Arizona, where Joe Biden won the popular vote in 2020 — fueling years of Republican rage, baseless “audits” of the vote, and preemptive attempts to deliver the state for Trump in 2024.

Currently, Arizona voters, via a standard popular vote, decide who’s awarded the state’s 11 presidential electors. Presidential candidates generally need at least 270 Electoral College votes to win the White House.

Kern’s new bill, Senate Concurrent Resolution 1014, would let state legislators decide how Electoral College votes are assigned in Arizona.

Previously, McConnell has faithfully backed the passing of bipartison legislation which would tighten immigration restrictions and provide aid to Ukraine, but in the meeting, McConnell floated splitting the bill. “When we started this, the border united us and Ukraine divided us,” McConnell told Republicans, according to a source familiar with his comments. “The politics on this have changed,” he added. Chaos at the border is a useful tool for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, and McConnell noted that would make it difficult for Republicans to back the bill. “We don’t want to do anything to undermine him,” said McConnell, whose remarks were first reported by Punchbowl News.

“I didn’t come here to have the president as a boss or a candidate as a boss. I came here to pass good, solid policy,” Tillis said Thursday, first reported by NBC News. “It is immoral for me to think you looked the other way because you think this is the linchpin for President Trump to win.”

…

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) called the effort to kill the bill “appalling.” Romney argued that there is an issue at the southern border and anyone running for president should be attempting to solve it now — instead of solving it later and taking credit for it down the road.

ORLANDO, Fla. — A bill filed Friday night by former GOP Chair Blaise Ingoglia in the Florida Senate would eliminate universal voting by mail in the state, potentially wiping out a method used by millions and embraced by both parties until former President Trump’s false charges of fraud emerged in 2020.

Reaction from a Republican elections supervisor was swift.

“I’m sick and tired of this crap,” said Alan Hays, who runs Lake County elections.

“I am embarrassed, as a former state senator myself, that a current senator would offer such a nonsensical idea,” Hays added. “The Senate is supposed to be a body of leaders, not destroyers. And I see nothing good that I can say about this bill at all. … Shame on him.”

…

“Not one of those legislators has any experience administering an election,” Hays said. “If they really want to mess things up and return Florida to being the laughingstock of the nation, keep on trying to sell this stuff. But until then, sit down, be quiet, and don’t mess with the election laws until you consult with the elections professionals.”

…

“Mail ballots – they cheat,” Trump said in April 2020. “People cheat. Mail ballots are a very dangerous thing for this country because they’re cheaters. They go and collect them. They’re fraudulent in many cases.”

But Trump voted by mail himself in Palm Beach County in the GOP primary. Asked why, he said, “Because I’m allowed to.”

…

“I personally cannot imagine this bill passing, if it even gets heard in one committee,” Hays said. “But it is absolutely absurd. And as an elections official, it’s insulting.”

…

Adding to that challenge is the U.S. Supreme Court, which has a right-wing majority and will ultimately decide whether Donald Trump can pursue the nation’s highest office.

Yet somehow, many Americans continue to downplay this danger, embracing a belief that autocracy could never happen in the United States and that the threat is overblown.

“[For] 54 years, they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it,” Trump said. “And I’m proud to have done it.”

…

But Trump criticized the anti-abortion movement after the Dobbs decision for explicitly political reasons. He saw the push for total abortion bans as contributing to Republicans’ poor showings in the 2022 midterm elections.

…

“You have to win elections,” Trump said. “Otherwise you’re going to be back where you were, and you can’t let that ever happen again.”

Abortion rights will again be a major issue in the 2024 election, with the public largely opposed to the demise of Roe v. Wade. A near record 55{b6c612fc4b2bfac0484f6bd691e00b5fa917b61f956b4ab545c6b636d2f6c7cf} of Americans reported that they support universal abortion rights, according to a Wall Street Journal-NORC poll in November.

In Nevada, Michael McDonald, the chair of the state Republican party, enacted new rules seen as especially damaging to DeSantis, by in effect blocking Super Pacs that the Florida governor relies on from participating in the caucuses.

The rules, which came almost immediately after McDonald was among a small group treated to a meal with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club, so disadvantages Trump’s other rivals that they have pulled up stakes entirely. Last month, McDonald was indicted by a Nevada grand jury on charges of forging and submitting fraudulent documents in the 2020 fake-elector scheme.

…

Another state that has shifted its rules is Michigan, which this cycle will run a complicated dual primary and caucus in a system where the majority of delegates will be bound in a process also seen as favoring Trump.

The moves have been denounced by Trump’s rivals as underhanded and tantamount to rigging the nominating contests; the reality is that Trump has significantly tilted the race to his advantage.

…
